An Unexpected Twist | The Story of Us

The Story of Us

Everyone loves a love story. Whether the story boasts of great feats to preserve love or soft moments that lead to romance, we all just love love. Actually, one of the first things I ask my couples is how they met! To me, it is such a good way to get to know them and their relationship! I especially like when they both tell “their side” of the story! Haha.

Josh and I get asked about our love story all the time. It’s just one of those questions you ask couples. Ya know.. “So, how did you two meet?” It comes up a lot! We love telling it {and we have our sides of the story too. ;)}. So, we decided it would be fun to share it with you! Now, I will warn you, it’s quite a ride. So, hang on and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

An Unexpected Twist

November had come. The leaves had fallen off the trees. Chilly air begged for warmer coats. Samantha sat inside her dorm room. Her blanket was wrapped around her. The phone buzzed next to her. Josh had texted. He simply asked, “Can I come see you?” Her heart started beating faster. “Of course,” she replied. “Alright, I’m on my way over,” he responded.

He slowly pulled into her dorm room parking lot. The street lights illuminated a few empty spots on the cold pavement. His hands clenched the steering wheel. He was nervous. He texted Samantha to let her know he was there and that he wanted to take a walk. She happily agreed. He got out of the car quickly and waited for her at the door. As he waited, he fiddled with his hands, not sure what to do.  She smiled as she saw him through the glass doors. And, he smiled back.

They started walking together. First, talking about their day. Their feet echoed as they hit the brick pavers. They passed under each successive light as they walked down the main path. On the right, the campus center. They had eaten there a few times together. On the left, a grassy hill and an amphitheater shrouded in darkness.

They continued walking straight as they talked. They were headed to the brightest part of campus. The fountain. It’s smooth, white stone seemed to glow under the warm lights. The sparkling water spilled over the rims of each tier. As the water hit the basin, it’s soothing sound could have lulled you to sleep. But, as they approached, their constant laughter was the only thing they could hear.

The beauty and light of the fountain drew them in. They sat down of the edge and continued to talk. Water droplets being blown by the wind hit them on the back. Even though it was cold, they couldn’t feel it. They were too entranced by each other’s company. As they sat there, their conversation grew even more playful.

“She loved that he could be herself around him. She loved that they laughed so much together. They were in sync.”

As they laughed, Josh reached one hand down into the cold water. And with a quick movement, he splashed water right into Samantha’s face. Understanding that retaliation was coming, he started running around the fountain away from her. She loved that he could be herself around him. She loved that they laughed so much together. They were in sync. They got each other. She was thankful for him.

Their hearts were still beating fast as they walked back. Samantha could feel his hand swinging right next to hers as they walked and talked. They were almost back to her dorm room when he changed the conversation. “So, I came to see you because I wanted to talk to you about something,” he started.

Samantha’s heart immediately leapt into her throat. Her heart racing faster and faster. Her palms grew clamy. She was thankful that it was dark. Maybe he couldn’t see her starting to blush. She looked at his half shadowed face as she waited to see what he had to say. She noticed that he looked uneasy. He looked down to avoid eye contact and started fiddling with his hands again. “I wanted to tell you that I think we should just be friends.”
