That Time We Almost Died | The Story of Us

The Story of Us

Everyone loves a love story. Whether the story boasts of great feats to preserve love or soft moments that lead to romance, we all just love love. Actually, one of the first things I ask my couples is how they met! To me, it is such a good way to get to know them and their relationship! I especially like when they both tell “their side” of the story! haha.

Josh and I get asked about our love story all the time. It’s just one of those questions you ask couples. Ya know.. “So, how did you two meet?” It comes up a lot! We love telling it {and we have our sides of the story too. ;)}. So, we decided it would be fun to share it with you! Now, I will warn you, it’s quite a ride. So, hang on and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

That Time We Almost Died

Josh quickly shut the door of his car. The engine strained to start in the November chill. He turned on his heater and waited. He looked in his rear view mirror as the garage door squeaked and strained open. As it lifted, he looked outside. It was 3AM and the only thing he could see was the orange glow of the streetlights. As he watched, he happened to catch a glimpse of himself. His eyes looked tired. He only had a couple hours of sleep. Nonetheless, he was excited. He and Samantha were spending the day together; it was basically a date. Though nothing was official, the thought made him smile.

After waiting for a few minutes, he realized that his heater wasn’t going to work. It did this from time to time. And, of course, it would happen this morning. He had promised Samantha that he would meet her at 4am. And, to get there on time, he needed to leave. But, without a heater, he knew his windshield would immediately fog up. So, he did the only thing he could think of. He rolled down his window, stuck out his head, and started driving. The early morning had been his idea anyways. He had never been Black Friday shopping, and Samantha was willing to go. So, despite the cold air whipping his face, he drove on.

It was 4:20. Josh and Samantha had met up and made their way to the first store of the morning. They were both excited and a little disoriented by the early morning. But, they were ready to give this their best shot. However, as soon as they walked through the doors of Old Navy, Josh realized something about himself. He was not patient enough for Black Friday shopping. The store had been open for less than a half hour and the line was already to the back of the store.

So, they changed their plan. They decided to grab some breakfast at IHOP (the only place open at 5am), and watch the sunrise from one of Josh’s favorite places. The balancing rock. The balancing rock was a large rock on top of Rainbow mountain. Its base was small and the top was wide and spacious. He and his roommates frequently ended their rock climbing trips atop this rock.

The climb up was easy. They both made it up without a problem. They sat and watched the sunrise through the bare trees and enjoyed their time together. When it was time to climb down, Josh went first. He planned on guiding her since the hand holds were tricky. But, as she started down, she surprised him. She was climbing fast. Her quick decent was impressive. It wasn’t an simple feat.

It took him another split second to realize that he was wrong. She wasn’t climbing. She was falling.

As soon as he realized she was falling, he threw his arms up to catch her. Her back made contact with his hands, and he pulled her towards him. The only problem was the rock slab on which he stood wasn’t flat. It was at a pretty dramatic angle and ended with a drop off down the mountain. So, when the force of catching her knocked him off balance, it started propelling them towards the cliff.

Fortunately, within a few steps, he was able to get her safely to the ground. But, he was still stumbling towards the drop off. It took him a couple more to regain his balance. As soon as he did, he looked at her. She was wide eyed. They both were scared. It had happened so fast. “That’s one way to get down,” he quipped. And, they chuckled as he helped her up.
