CARMEL CITY CENTER ENGAGEMENT SESSION | JESSICA AND CODY

During their Carmel city center engagement session, I found out that Jessica and Cody are models in disguise! The two are so natural in front of the camera. Plus, they are so adorable when interacting with each other. Jessica’s giggly personality brought so much life and movement to our session, and Cody’s soft smiles added personable and sincere moments.

We started at the Center for Performing Arts in Carmel for their cloudy and cool engagement session. Frequently called the Palladium, the Center for Performing Arts had gorgeous white walls and gardens that surround the property. The gardens seemed to be a natural place to start as we walked, talked, and laughed through the beginning of our shoot. After shooting in the gardens, we walked across the street to the reflecting pool directly behind the Veteran’s Memorial. I love shooting next to water, so the reflecting pool was perfect for our session. We walked all the way around it, shooting at various angles as we went.

After a quick wardrobe change, we headed West to Coxhall Gardens. This is one of the loveliest places to shoot, and it didn’t disappoint. The willows, lakes, and the amphitheatre are some of my favorite things about the Gardens. So after making sure we had pictures next to the willows, we took some twirling shots at the amphitheatre to end our night!! <3

Jessica and Cody, it was such a blessing to get to know you two better and capture your love story! I loved seeing your distinct personalities shine through in your engagement images! I am so excited for you two, and I cannot wait for your February wedding!

ROMANTIC SUNSET COUPLES SESSION AT BIG SPRING PARK | HANNAH AND WILL

Hannah and Will’s romantic sunset couples session was a dream!!! The evening light was beautiful. Hannah and Will are so in love. And downtown Huntsville never disappoints!

When we first started talking about Hannah and Will’s session, we knew that we wanted to have their session somewhere in Huntsville. It is a great place for portraits because of the diversity within the city. The downtown provides modern and bright urban areas that have multiple parks nestled within in it! Once we narrowed down the city, we decided the best location would be around the downtown square and Big Spring Park!

On the day of the session, it was beautiful! Despite the high temperatures, the clouds were providing a good bit of relief throughout the day. We started their session around the square downtown! White walls and cute buildings were everywhere downtown, so their portraits ended up so light and airy!!!

After spending some time in the square, we made our way through Big Spring Park! While we were in the park, the sun started setting which made the light so amazing! Plus, Hannah and Will are obviously best friends, so their session was so natural and sweet!

And then, about a week after our session, Will PROPOSED! So now, Hannah and Will are newly engaged, and I could not be happier for them! Their session is a testament to their friendship and their upcoming vows to spend the rest of their lives together! I am so excited for the life they will start together when the tie the knot!!! And I am so glad that I was able to capture their love before their engagement at their romantic sunset couples session!

ROMANTIC ENGAGEMENT SESSION IN MCFARLAND PARK | BRITNEY AND AJ

Britney and AJ’s session did not start off as a romantic engagement session in McFarland Park. It actually started differently, and ended wonderfully.

Britney and AJ scheduled a couples session back in June. They were already so excited about their session (so was I!!!!), and we knew that we would shoot where they lived in Florence, Alabama. Then, two days before our scheduled session, AJ PROPOSED!!!! So, our session became an engagement session!!!! Britney was SO excited when she told me!

With our new engagement session details, Britney wanted to have the session at McFarland Park because of the proximity to the river. And she picked well!!! The evening and sunset were incredibly beautiful! The beach, cliffs, and docks were all perfect for their engagement session!

But the true joy was seeing their faces light up throughout the session! You can see how excited they are about getting married! They are truly marrying their best friend, and I couldn’t be happier for them!

27 TIPS FOR GORGEOUS ENGAGEMENT PICTURES

You are engaged! Your engagement is such a short and unique stage in your life, I am so excited for you to marry your best friend! Since it is such a special time, many people opt to take engagement pictures. But, sometimes, it is hard to know what to wear and to bring to your engagement session. Check out these 27 tips for gorgeous engagement pictures! These tips will help you figure out which outfits to wear, what styles to choose, and what things to bring with you. I hope that these tips empower you to rock your engagement session and feel more confident in front of the camera!

Get ready to take a ton of screenshots…

Clothing

1. Feel Comfortable and Confident

If you don’t feel comfortable and in what you are wearing, you will be able to see that in your images! Once you pick an outfit, go ahead try it on a few times and make sure you are comfortable.

2. Dress It Up

You want to wear an enhanced version of your normal wardrobe, as long as it does not distract from you. Your engagement session is a perfect reason to dress up and look awesome! Wear something nice and flattering.

3. Mix It Up

Try to mix up the color of the clothing you bring for completely different looks.

4. Coordinate, don’t match!

Most people feel like they have to match their fiance in their engagement pictures. However, this is not the case. You can wear different colors, but make sure the colors coordinate with each other! That means that the colors should compliment each other.

5. Plan Your Outfits

Pick out your outfits a few days in advance, and try them on! Make sure that you cannot see any undergarments and that they outfits look good together!

6. Think About Posing

Make sure they are still comfortable and appropriate in various positions: sitting, kneeing, hands-above-your-head.

7. Check White Clothing

If your outfits are lighter in color (which I love!!!), make sure you cannot see through them! Grab a slip or an undershirt if you can see through the clothing.

8. Iron it

All outfits need to be clean and without wrinkles before your session.

9. What to Avoid

Try to avoid overwhelming patterns, large logos, baggy pieces, or horizontal stripes for your session.

10. Accessorize

Scarves, jackets, etc. are great accessories that can be easily added or removed to change an outfit.

11. Outfit Changes

There are not always convenient places to change during an outdoor session. You might want to bring car shades, large blankets, etc. so you can make a changing room.

Sleep & Food

12. SLEEP SLEEP SLEEP!

Get as much sleep as possible the night before the session.  You might be tempted to stay up and make last minute changes or worry about the pimple on your face. RELAX. The more rest you get, the better session you will have.

13. Puffy Eyes?

If you have a morning session, you can apply a cold compress to your eyes for a few minutes before applying makeup. This will reduce puffiness and make you feel better.

14. Don’t Skip a Meal

You and anyone accompanying you to the session need to EAT beforehand!!! Being hangry during your engagement session won’t be good for your pictures… I also recommend bringing a snack and water to your session!

Skin, Makeup, & Glasses

15. Protect Your Skin

Avoid getting sunburned. If you are red and peeling, you must reschedule.

16. Makeup Tips

Follow your normal makeup routine, but apply your makeup a little heavier than you would on a normal day.

17. Focus on Your Eyes

Be precise when applying eye makeup since this is where I will focus in all your portraits.

18. Plan for Touch-Ups

I highly recommend bringing chap stick, lipstick, foundation, powder, hairspray, etc. Also, bring a few makeup remover wipes, just in case.

19. Avoid the Glare

If you wear glasses, there is a chance that there will be a glare in your images. To lower the chance of glass glare in your images, you can visit your optometrist to see if they will lend you a pair of glasses without lenses, or you can have your lenses removed from your glasses.

Hair & Nails

20. Plan Your Hairstyle

Pick your hairstyle a few weeks before your session, and practice! If you are doing your own hair, do not try a new hairstyle the day of the session. You want to try and pick a “classic” hairstyle.  If you need a little extra hold, add some hairspray, but do not too much.

21. Should I get A Haircut?

I advise you to get your haircut at least a month before your session (girls) or a week before your session (guys). A haircut will make your hair more shiny, healthy, and natural for your session.

22. Hair Styles to Avoid

Try to avoid major hair style changes before your session including hair color. Whether you are doing your own hair or having a professional do it, you want your pictures to look like YOU!

23. Don’t forget to shave!

Girls – Remember to shave your legs and underarms if they will be visible during the shoot.

Guys – Shave or trim your beard the day of your session.

24. Clean or Polished Nails

Your hands will be in the majority of your images, so make sure your nails are clean, trimmed, and/or freshly painted.

Posing & Props

25. Practice Makes Perfect

Try this: Look in the mirror and smile.  Now, think about what makes you really, really happy and smile again. Do you see a difference in your smile and your eyes???  THAT smile is the one you want at your session. Your eyes light up when you really smile!

26. Bring Props

I love to add props into my client’s sessions to make it more personal. Make sure to tell me what props you would like to use before the session, so I can plan accordingly.

Props can include: bouquet of flowers, family pet, etc.

People

27. Bring A Friend

Not only should you and your fiance be there, but I would HIGHLY recommend bringing a friend or family member to the session! It is a great stress reliever in many ways to have someone with you to help out. Just make sure you are comfortable kissing in front of them! 😉

INDIANAPOLIS ENGAGEMENT SESSION AT WEST PARK | SHELBY AND JARED

On Monday, I had the pleasure of spending the evening with Shelby and Jared for their Indianapolis engagement session at West Park and Coxhall Gardens! Shelby and Jared have been together for 6 1/2 years, and they have been engaged for 2 years! Naturally, they are completely comfortable around each other and allowed me to capture their playful and intense love.

During their session, I am pretty sure that I used the word “cute” about a thousand times. (And we have since vowed that I will invest in a thesaurus or Shelby will make me a list of  alternative words!) In reality, every time I looked through the viewfinder, there was another amazing image. And it was all because these two are just so perfect for each other. You don’t have to look very hard to see their commitment and genuine adoration for each other. As their friends put it… #relationshipgoals.

I am so excited to be photographing their November wedding! And I am posting this blog on another special day, Jared’s birthday! (HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JARED!)

MILITARY ENGAGEMENT SESSION AT COXHALL GARDENS | ANDIE AND DREW

On Friday night, I was privileged to capture an emotional love story during Andie and Drew’s Engagement Session at Coxhall Gardens and Holcomb Gardens in Indianapolis. {Warning: If you do not have tissues handy, go grab some!}

THEIR STORY…

Andie and Drew met at a bonfire. Being shy, Andie didn’t approach anyone naturally. But, for some reason, she felt comfortable around the guy who continuously had a smile on his face. She started a conversation with Drew, something she never did, and the conversation flowed easily. A month later, they started talking again. They saw each other a few times, and the tenor of their conversations remained unbridled and natural. From then on, they saw each other every day. They laughed together, shared stories, and went on adventures for the next year.

On March 29, 2017, Drew asked Andie to spend the rest of her life with him. He dropped to one knee on a sandy beach in St. Thomas while vacationing with his family. He remembers being worried that the ring was going to fall into the ocean while he was proposing. As Andie joyfully accepted Drew’s unexpected proposal, the St. Thomas beach-goers applauded and cheered.

Days later, Drew was sworn into the Army with a leave date in a month’s time. Drew and Andie had a few big decisions to make. They had to figure out if they would have a wedding ceremony and what their living situation would be if they got married. Since Drew would be on active duty for at least four years, they would have to wait if they wanted to have a traditional ceremony.

They decided that they could not wait four years to pledge their lives to each other. Before he left, they wanted to start this new journey with the foundation of marriage. Before he left, they wanted to profess their love to one another. Before he left, Drew and Andie wanted to say, “I do.”

On Friday, May 5, 2017, Andie and Drew had an intimate courthouse ceremony and started their lives as husband and wife. They found an apartment that she could call home while he was gone. They bought a puppy to keep her company. And they could not be happier with their decision.

Andie beautifully described her wedding day by saying, “Most people wouldn’t call this a fairytale. But to me… this was more than a fairytale. It was more than spending a full year figuring out how I’m going to spend thousands of dollars. It was more than trying to find the perfect venue and the perfect flowers and decorations to fit the event. Today was the most amazing day. Today I said “I Do” to my best friend, my partner in crime and the one I get to spend forever with.”

The title of this post is a bit of a misnomer. The two were celebrating their one week wedding anniversary when we met for this session. It was a joy to experience this new and exciting time with them. Their wedding / engagement session at Coxhall Gardens and Holcomb Gardens was filled with laughter and love that is evident in their images.

Drew leaves for training on May 23. He will be on away for 4-6 years. Andie is going to finish college while he is on duty. They will desperately miss each other, but they are confident that they can withstand any storm. After all, they are now Mr. & Mrs.

I feel truly honored to have captured their love during our engagement session at Coxhall Gardens and Holcomb Gardens before Drew leaves for training. I hope these are memories that will be treasured for a lifetime. But more importantly, I hope they help them through the next 4-6 years of their marriage.

SUNSET ENGAGEMENT SESSION IN ZIONSVILLE | RACHEL AND ERIC

Last night, I had the privilege of spending some time with Rachel and Eric during their engagement session in Zionsville and Carmel, Indiana. We started their sunny engagement session at Starkey Nature Reserve after days and days of rain. The bright sky was a welcome sight and made the entire session light and airy. As soon as we started shooting, I noticed how comfortable Rachel and Eric were with each other. One of my favorite things about the couple is how much Eric makes Rachel laugh. Her infectious laughter filled the engagement session to create a light and comfortable atmosphere for the whole evening.

Before the session, Rachel expressed how much she wanted to have flowers in her engagement pictures. I was excited about the idea, but the session fell in between blooming seasons. Luckily, while driving around the day before, I happened to find a field full of blooming yellow and white flowers. This field was our second stop during the session. It was a little muddy trying to get to the field, but it was so worth it! The images were beautiful and Rachel and Eric looked awesome!

Finally, we made our way to Coxhill Gardens in Carmel, Indiana. We arrived just in time for sunset which is one of my favorite times to shoot! As the sky lit up, the water turned to glass and created reflections of the large bell tower and spring greenery. It was a perfect way to the end the session.

Rachel and Eric, I am so excited to be apart of your wedding day in less than a month! I know it will be filled with just as much love and laughter as your engagement session, and I can’t wait!

INDIANA WAR MEMORIAL ENGAGEMENT SESSION | JULIA + TREAVOR

I had the pleasure of spending Saturday morning with Julia and Treavor for their Indiana War Memorial Engagement Session. I was overjoyed when they approached me about the shoot because their story is truly a fairytale.

During their sophomore year of high school, Julia and Treavor walked down the halls together with their arms down at their sides. They each secretly hoped that the other might reach out to hold their hand. Then, one day, their hands met and everything changed. Julia and Treavor stood in the hallway of that same high school to share their first kiss. They graduated together, enrolled in college together, and are now planning a life together. And if their story was not sweet enough, they are one of the most adorable couples I have ever met. They both love to laugh, and their soft smiles reassure each other. However, the looks of adoration truly convince me that they have found their other half.

On Saturday, they continued to prove that their love story is real. It was 40 degrees and windy the morning of their engagement session. However, Julia and Treavor’s lovely personalities transformed a less than ideal circumstance into one of my favorite engagement sessions. They never complained about the cold. Everything looked so much brighter because of their bubbly personalities and obvious affection for one another! The session took us all around downtown Indianapolis including the Indiana War Memorial, University Park, and the Canal Walk. Overall, it was a perfect morning for their Indiana War Memorial engagement session.

Julia and Treavor, I am so thankful to be a part of your love story. You have been through so many life stages together, and I am so happy that you are vowing to be together though every life stage for the rest of your lives. The two of you have such a strong and secure relationship, and I cannot wait to see where your marriage takes you.
